A coffee filter or bandana or such will help get silt and fine sand out, but colloidal size clay prticles are so fine they would mostly go right through. A few years ago I was doing geochemical research on marine clays and would have to centrifuge for 30-
 45 minutes at high revolutions to get them to settle out. They would have normal settling rates of a few mm per year!! That stuff is HARD to get out and is fairly common in the desert southwest. You get it washing off into the streams after a hard rain
