I havent read any of the other posts on Cameras yet, but I am betting that
my choice of camera will be unique in the list.

I have never had much stomach for those point and shoot cameras that give
you no control over what is really in the picture. So I always backpack
with a full blown 35mm SLR with a 200mm telephoto lens.

I have been back packing with the same one since 82 and have had no
problems. I keep it in a zip lock bag in one of the upper pockets of my
external frame pack. It is convenient enough for me to whip out of its
'holser' and take pictures easily while hiking.

Yes, it has come out on occasion as I have bent over too quickly or too far.
Guess I ahve been lucky because despite the dents (body and lens) it still
shoots fine.

But more importantly to me than what type of camera to bring is what to be
making pictures of in the first place. My first trip to Philmont I recorded
every hill, cloud, sunset, and mini-bear. When I got back I kept looking at
the photos and thinking, 'This isnt what it was all about'. Since that trip
I try to include as many people in the photos as possible. Sunsets are
nice, but really how much orange can one really stand?

The commissaries carry film, but I would not rely on them to keep you
outfitted with the best speeds of film.
