I havent read any of the other posts on Cameras yet, but I am betting that my
choice of camera will be unique in the list.

I have never had much stomach for those point and shoot cameras that give you
no control over what is really in the picture. So I always backpack with a
full blown 35mm SLR with a 200mm telephoto lens....

Not "unique", but certainly not typical. On my first trek in '99 my son and
I shared his point and shoot 35mm, which had a small built-in zoom (35-70mm,
if I remember correctly). More than adequate, but when I returned in '00 on
an Autumn Adventure, I took my ancient Pentax SLR with and a 70-200mm zoom lens.
Carried it in a small camera bag with strap around my neck, above the pack
straps. The bag sat on my hip a little more forward than it would without the
pack, but not really a problem, and was readily available for shots on the trail.
Took the same outfit last summer. And will again this fall, if I make the
trip!

The zoom really makes a huge difference with the landscape shots from the peaks
- I could pick out my tent at Ute Meadows from the top of Baldy. But more importantly,
and to echo Doug's comment, it really lets you pull in the people (things like
"kissing Carrie" while spar pole climbing), and it's the people in the pictures
that make the difference. Even when taking shots of the mountains and views,
I always try to get someone in the foreground as well.

And picking up on a comment from an earlier post, the lighting at Philmont is
a challenge. I consider myself a pretty good amateur photographer and understand
how light affects photos, but still ended up with more than a few pictures that
have people or things in the shadows. If the crew designates one or two crew
photographers, make sure that they know how to deal with lighting issues.
