Well, I'll throw out my $0.02 on the issue too...
I also took an SLR in '00, along with a couple lenses. I rigged up a
unique attachment system so that it was readily available yet still
comfortable... Instead of the usual neck-strap, I used two of those
plastic quick-connects (like every other fastener on common backpacks)
to attach it to my shoulder straps. The camera has a tendancy to swing
and bounce like this, though, so I also attached a short "tail" to the
camera (an old piece of nylon strap), which I tucked under my hipbelt.
That brought it under control.
I kept the film and other lens in a large plastic bag in the topmost
section of my pack (internal frame), where I could reach then even while
hiking (with a few contortions, granted :-). The camera also went there
in case of serious weather.
