Jerry Lewis asked, and my experience with our crew 703E11 in 2001 was ...
1. I understand we have to hang that days' clothes. OK, what does "that
day's clothes" include? (I assume it doesn't mean underwear and socks.)
Pants and shirts went up once they had been worn until they were washed.
2. I understand clothing changes are supposed to occur in the "central
area" (meaning, kitchen), and that only sleeping clothes are supposed to be
worn over to and inside the tent. OK, what about naps (not just adults--the
Scouts sometimes
crash after a long hike into a non-program camp), and coming off the trail
in wet and muddy clothes? Are we supposed to change back and forth and back
and forth each time we want to crawl into our tent?
We changed in our tents, and took naps in day clothes, not night sleeping
clothes.
3. The original June/early July requirements regarding changing clothes
flew heavily into the face of Youth Protection requirements, not to mention
coed needs. Some advisors reported even taking down the dining fly, setting
it up as a screen, and never using it for rain protection. OK, what were
the final instructions in August from the Rangers after HQ got hit so hard
with YP concerns?
Since we changed in our tents, this was not an issue.
At least in early July, the whole issue was still subject to interpretation,
even with a sheet of written protocols. At each Staff camp, during check-in
the Staff went over bear procedures with each crew. They were always
slightly different. More dealt with setting up the camp - placing tents
close together, in a row and not a circle, 50 feet (or maybe 50 yards) from
the bearmuda triangle, packs in the bearmuda triangle (or maybe on the other
side), all cooking gear up in the bear bag (or maybe just the plastic, with
any metal pots or bowls stacked on top of the sump as an early warning
measure), etc. Staff also conducted nighttime inspections of sites, waking
up crews to correct any problems they observed (at least so I was told, we
apparently were okay since we were not awakened!)
