We had 717 last year. Bear precautions at Philmont are important every year.
In '93 "the bears had come down out of the mountains because it was dry".
It rained 11 of 12 days. We have had encounters with bears (close and other)
every year. The Rangers will instruct, but it is up to the crew (since you
only have the Ranger for 2 days), to "take care of business". A bear in camp
is a terrifying experience (in '95 had 2 boys who "didn't want to wake the
rest of you" and threw candy wrappers out of their tent (thank God) into the
middle of camp). If your preparation is proper, you will not have a problem.
Trail clothes, other clothes, are a matter of common sense (duh). We
ziplock bagged them and put them under the dining fly. In the morning the
bear bag crew delivered them to the door of your tent. Having smellables in
your tent is stupid, and dangerous. Leaving them in your pack is the same.
We did have to pitch our tents differently, as mentioned earlier, in a
cluster. "Oops bag is tremendous invention for forgetfulness and when alone
in camp. Common sense rules. Changing clothes in your tent, when they are
covered in food, is quite a different matter than a routine change of
clothes.
Pay attention to your Ranger and ALL must recognize the importance of bear
precautions.
