Our Council is thinking about getting custom CSP's for our contingents trip.
Is patch trading anything like it is at the Jamboree? Want to know if we should
figure 2 or 10 patches per scout.

Comments....
Our Council has produced custom contingent CSP's for at least the past three
years - the only differnece between them being the year of the expedition (and
a Council name change due to merger in 2000). Very distinctive, if I do say
so myself - "Philmont" in large red letters on a black background, with the
"O" replaced by the Indian / New Mexico sun symbol (whose name escapes me at
the moment) in yellow. Most participants, in my experience, keep this on their
uniforms after their return - I have. From the Council's point of view, that
fact is good advertising for future contingents. Don't know exactly, but think
that they produce about 4 or 5 for each contingent member and sell them first
come, first served to those interested (after the mandatory first one).

As noted by others, trading of these at Philmont was somewhat limited. If you
make a custom strip, definitely have one for your Ranger, and possibly a couple
for the CHQ snack bar and establishments in town with displays. In the backcountry,
staff seemed to be a little more interested than other trekkers, but it definitely
is not a big thing. Carry a few for that purpose, if you are into trading.
The trade with staffers may not be patch for patch, but rather something like
real food for a patch. And of course, on your return you can trade at other
scout events.
