So we're OK if we had a really bad experience and hated it? ^;}
Thanks for the info. I asked because I was looking for pre-tax advisor
meeting hints.

Subject: [Philmont]: Philmont - Tax Deductions
For those of you interested in the tax thread regarding deductibility of
Philmont expenses I offer the following advice:
The U.S. tax code says, "For citizens of the USA, the United States'
1986
Tax Act denies a deduction for travel expenses when the volunteer enjoys
a
significant amount of personal pleasure, recreation or vacation before,
during or after a service program. The monetary value of your volunteer
time
is not tax-deductible."
Please note the phrase "enjoys a significant amount of personal
pleasure".
Deducting some of your Philmont expenses would certainly be justifiable,
but
you are treading on thin ice if you deduct all of your expenses. You may
have done this successfully in the past, but that is only because you
have
not been audited.
Even though an adult advisor is "on duty" 24/7 that may not (does not)
diminish the amount of personal pleasure you receive. A contingent
leader
for a council with his/her increased responsibility may be in the best
position to defend a full tax deduction. The designated lead crew
advisor
would have an advantage over a dad just along for the ride. There is no
absolutely clear cut answer. It all depends. Whatever you do in this
regard
I cannot overstate the importance of detailed documentation.
It is a totally different circumstance if you are going to the Philmont
Training Center. You can deduct 100% of PTC tuition, 100% of travel
costs,
and 100% of all other costs associated with the PTC trip, as long as it
was
not preceded or followed by a family vacation (in that case, it might be
that none of the travel expense is deductible [your direct PTC expenses
would still be deductible] - you need to consult with a tax advisor
regarding your specific situation).
I agree with an earlier comment that the following website has a good
discussion about Scouting and taxes, but I disagree with some of its
advice,
as likely an IRS auditor might also:

The advice contained in this e-mail is for discussion purposes only and
should not be used for making personal tax decisions. Always seek out a
qualified tax advisor to help you when preparing your tax return.
