Del asked: "Is anything open off season like this for them to see?
Can they at least get into Philmont and maybe see base camp or the
Tooth from a distance? Tooth of Time Traders? Museum?
Anything?"
The Tooth of Time is clearly visible (esp. from the south) for
quite a distance. It was once a major landmark along the Santa Fe
trail. The parking lot of base camp will surely be open at least
as a place to stop and look around. As for the museums, the
trading post, and "looking around" I'd suggest calling ahead at
505-376-2281 and check to see what the openings/policies are.
Also, Hwy 64 between Cimarron and Ute Park passes right through
Philmont territory, and beyond Ute Park towards Taos, there is
some terrific scenery. I'd also recommend the Taos Pueblo if
they-re going to make the trip that direction.
