I would recommend arriving at Philmont as early as possible on your
specified arrival date. The earlier you arrive, the earlier you finish your
check-in process (hopefully!). This should give you some time in the
afternoon to at least tour the Philmont Museum and Seton Library (both of
these are housed in a building directly across the street from Camping
Headquarters). If you do have time, that is where you would sign up for a
Villa Tour. If you don't have enough time, you can sign up for a tour for
the day you get off the trail. Another option would be to stop and visit
these sites first thing in the morning en route to Philmont and then
check-in before lunch. It takes about 30 minutes to tour the museum and the
Villa Tour is also about 30 minutes (plan on an hour to include walking
there and back).
As for the Kit Carson Museum at Rayado, plan on doing this after your trek.
If you have your own vehicles, you can go down there at your leisure.
Otherwise, Philmont provides bus service at no charge. You will need to
make reservations for the bus upon check-in. I believe the buses leave CHQ
at 3pm and return at 5pm.
These are just suggestions - a lot will depend on exactly how your schedule
works out. There is no charge for any of museums or the Villa Tour. Hope
this helps...
