Re: [Philmont]: Sightseeing upon arrival

Pete, I can sympathize with you. My trek was in 1967 (625-I) and we got
into camping headquarters and into the thick of shakedown. We didn't see
either the Villa, the Seton or the Kit Carson museums, although we made a
stop just before we got to Cimarron to buy deer antlers and cowboy
hats. Even worse, our last night on the trail was at Stockade and we were
scheduled to hike the Tooth into CHQ the next morning. Instead the
advisors got the idea to go see Taos, so we were picked up by bus early,
then went on to our bus and to Taos. I can recall the adviser insisting
that we not sleep on the bus because this was a great side trip. O.K., the
Rio Grand gorge bridge was neat, Taos was interesting (at least compared to
what it seems like now), but I think I would have preferred the Tooth hike
into CHQ.

Definitely go to the Kit Carson museum before you release your bus; it's a
few miles south of CHQ. As the father of a Cub Scout, I think that the
upstairs portion of the Villa is not as interesting for youth, but the
downstairs definitely is. The Seton Museum is worth the walk from CHQ if
for no other reason than to pick up a souvenir that would be pleasing to
your significant other (jewlery, etc.)

Hope this helps.
