Cavalcade notes
We went on a cavalcade in 92.
The bags we used were eqivalent to the utility stuff sack found in the Boy
Scout catalog #ZO 1486 priced at $13.25 each. I put my sleeping bag in such
a sack that Philmont furnished, plus a bag liner, plus sleep clothes. (my
bag is old, but light) I took a thermarest. The tents, food, crew gear,
sleeping bag etc. are carried on pack horses. (we had 3 pack horses in our
group.
All other stuff fits into saddle bags that Philmont provides. Two pair
of jeans..long sleeve shirt, underwear, flashlight, eating stuff....that is
about it. Philmont furnished the yellow slickers for rain gear which are
tied on the saddle. Your legs get very wet, as does the back of your neck
with this rain gear.
I took one water bottle, with a string tied around its neck, which I
attached to saddle horn. That seemed to work ok. I also bought a fanny
pack and wore around waist with camera, leather gloves (to help lead pack
horses) and keep chap stick available. Horses stop at camps where this is
water so not the worry with dry camps, although we did take water from a cow
pasture stream and purified in 2 1/2 gallon containers. Cowboy boots a
must. (we took camp shoes for side hikes).
We had a full crew for cavalcade and used Philmont tents, as horses
carried them.
Good luck
Jon Odell
Philmont 60, 92 and in 02
