We had excellent success with Whisperlites in 2000. They have the additional
advantage of using fuel that is available at all the back country trading
posts. Santa brought me a new Dragonfly though. It may go with our crew this
summer in case they want to be able to simmer. Standardizing on just one
make of stove means only one repair kit for the whole crew though, instead
of one for each stove. Not much weight, but it all counts.

I have the MSR Whisperlite which I like for heating water fast, it has on
setting (Full power) and doesn't simmer too well. The base is a bit small
and we have difficulty when using patrol size pots on it.
I had the opportunity to use the MSR Dragonfly on my last trek and loved it.
It starts easier than the Whisperlite, can be turned down to simmer, and the
base is a little more stable for large pots.
My trek will be using the Dragonfly primarily and the Whisperlite for
backup.

We have used the Whisperlite for several years with good success. We have
used them in conditions varying from Florida heat to North Carolina rains to
11,000' at Comanche Camp (Philmont). One of the things we like about them
is they are very easy to service in the field. We have only had to do this
a few times when a Scout got too much fuel in the bowl and there was a
carbon build-up. When a Scout joins our Venture program after 7th grade
their Patrol/Crew switches to this stove. I recommend them highly.

In recent years, we have used the new Coleman stoves that burn the Max =
fuel cartridges. These fuels are also sold in the PHilmont backcountry. =
Very fast boil time & very good simmer, as well as very stable. I've =
been quite pleased with this stove. You don't have to mess with liquid =
fuel - just pop the cartridge on & burn. Does very well in altitude =
as well as cold. Cartridges are made of recycleable aluminum that can =
be crushed & turned in with other Philmont trash. Drawback is that you =
are limited to this fuel, but the benefits have been worth it.

You may have already tried this but our crew found a tritium stove base that
folds out and you attach it to the base of the whisperlite. It greatly
improves the stoves stability and is actually very small and light. It's in
campmor and probbly in other places.

Just a reminder to all who are bringing their own stoves to Philmont. In
2000, we had a crew in our contingent have their stoves confiscated at the
airport when they tried to ship them in their backpacks. I am sure, since
September 11, 2001, things have gotten even tighter. I would strongly
recommend checking your airline's stove policy. They do vary from airline
to
airline. You may wind up shipping your stoves and fuel bottles like we did
to and from Philmont.

I really have to agree with you on this one. We've had a lot of guys go
over the years and we always UPSed them out there. It is fast and easy and
you have one less thing to try to pack and carry.

Hi there folks, Hopefully we all had a nice Holiday Break. We have spots
reserved for two crews in August of 2003 but this is a first time for us as
a
troop. If you have two crews going out at the same time can both crews go
on
the same trek so they stay together as a troop? Who can we contact since I
have been unsuccessful at contacting someone at the ranch? Any help here
form you veterans would be appreciated.

Thanks, Steve B.

Philmont has 35 itineraries and they will allow up to 2 crews to start
on the same itinerary each day. So, yes, both crews are allowed to go
on the same trek. Each crew has put the same choices on the postcard
that is mailed in and you need to indicate that the two crews wish to
trek together. I would recommend getting your choices in early to get
your first choice of treks.

If you want to talk to someone at Philmont, the Ranch offices are open
from 8 to 5 MT Monday-Friday. You can call them at (505)376-2281 or
contact them by email at philprog@cimarron.springercoop.com.

this really what the crews want to do? I would suspect that in the
course of your training activities you will find (at least) two distinct
groups in the total population, with distinct sets of goals and
ambitions. I would wait to make this decision, and then it should be a
crew decision. (But it doesn't hurt to check out the possiblities and
process.)

You could also consider treks with rendevous points along the way, for
example both crews are in Beaubien on day 5. You could also end at the
same place so the Troop could finish together. That way each crew can
"do its own thing" but share the experiences from time to time.

Yes, you both can, unless you are short on adults you need to do different
treks that is the Philmont experience. My suggestion would be, submit
different itineraries that cross somewhere in the back country and then
include you sister crews to meet your other scouts and scouters and meet new
scout and scouter friends.
