As stated in several previous responses Philmont handles this extremely
well.
Also, their priority after getting the Scout or Scouter to base camp is to
get that person back on the trail as soon as possible. They figure that is
part of the healing process, while the person is in base camp they are
depressed by the fact they are not on the trail, as soon as they return they
get an I did it and I can finish boost to their morale. And as they quickly
learn, if you are not trailbound or homebound, there is nothing to do in
base camp.
It was said that one Scout returned via dump truck. And that a lot of time
they use Chaplains to this. There are two types of situations, those
requiring immediate aid and those of not so immediate nature (e.g sprained
ankle. Boy cannot continue but is in no immediate danger or pain if he sits
on a staff cabin porch)
For the latter the phrase is, "We will get him back to base camp via first
available transport."
In 2000 we lost an advisor and his son this way. By the time their
transport arrived, they could do the porch talk at Pueblano because they had
heard it so many times. They were on the porch from when we left in the
morning until about 3 PM.
However, if there is a need Philmont is there and they send whoever is
available. In 2002 a Scout came down with 104 fever and was throwing up
while we were at Cypher's Mine. The staff tried all they could, the stomp
was light that night as we had a few of the staffers attending to our Scout.
They called for transport to get there as fast possible. Who showed up?
Mark Anderson and his daughter, Kirsten!! They sent the boss because they
knew they knew the need and he was available. When they say they respond
when needed - they do!!
They will only return a Scout or Scouter to a staffed camp. For safety,
they can't just leave him or her standing there at a trail camp alone until
your crew shows up and timing the arrival of a crew to a trail camp is iffy.
Also, almost all staff camps have road access. Not all trail camps have
road access to deliver the returning trekker.
Hope this helps.
