We evacuated two people during our trek. One was a 17 y/o who tore something
in his knee. He was able to make it into the next staffed camp. Philmont
took care of everything for him. The crew went on with their trek. We also
evacuated a 40 ish female, who had issues. She went to base camp for a
couple of days, and was returned to the crew on the trail at a staffed camp.
As for crew members "quitting," there is a simple solution. Do lots of prep
hikes, that require a true effort. Our crew spent the entire Spring Break
before our Philmont trek in Northern Arkansas, on the Ozark Highlands trail.
To put it very bluntly, it kicked our butt....When we returned home though,
we thought we were well prepared for Philmont. It turns out that the grades
and condition of the trails were much more difficult that anything we ran
across at Philmont. Because of this, our crew was "prepared for the worst"
At Philmont we had a blast due to this preparation.
