[Philmont]: RE: coming off the trail

As stated in a previous post "Philmont is run with the precision of Disney
World" and they have been doing longer too. Every staffed camp has radio
contact back to base camp, every ranger trains the crew in emergency
procedures such as noting their position, how to assign persons to get help,
what info to bring to the staff camp, etc. If the hurt person is
tranportable than the whole crew goes to the next staffed camp with him or
her.

Last year I witnessed a scout blow out his knee on the climbing wall at
Miners Park during the evening activity. The whole camp was very
professional and efficient in how they cared for the boy. The staff had
personnel trained in wilderness first aid who took over the scene and did a
great job. I had an MD in my crew and he observed as they performed the
first aid, he identified himself as a doctor, made a few suggestions and
generally stayed out of their way. After this was over he had commented in
how good of a job they did in caring for the boy.

As mentioned in another post "These details are all well handled by staff.
It shouldn't be a concern. Just get ready to have the time of your life."

We adults get caught up in preparing to the last item. I suggest putting
that energy in the physical training, that is one of the major elements to a
good trek, the other is teamwork. Tired weak hikers become crabby easily,
tired weak hikers tend to get injured easier. You have a better trek if
your stops are to smell the roses rather than to gasp for breath.

Philmont sends excellent materials out in a timely manner, every
participant will have a personal Guidebook to Adventure about late March.
This is their personal reference book, it contains what clothing and
equipment to bring, what will be provided by Philmont and what will not
ie.(stoves). Make sure everyone reads this booklet it is jammed packed with
valuable information. I still have my 1966 Guidebook and the information in
it can still be found in the current version plus the technology updates.
