Diane,
Thanks for turning off the HTML - you were successful.
For filling the spot you might try contacting the council/district and
seeing if there are one or more boys from a nearby troop that could
fill the spot.
If your crew is currently at 7-8 participants, and there are up to 4-5
scouts from a nearby troop that could join in, Philmont will let you
expand the size of the crew, even up to the last minute, I think.
Coordinating air travel becomes a bigger headache, but that also can
be manageable.
If your crew is currently at 12, and would drop to 11, and give you
only one space to fill, that may be a tougher job, but still probably
manageable.
If this is a real situation, and current, (not hypothetical) you could
send an email to this list and you might find someone with a son
between 14-17 who would like to, and be available to go.

Coop's and Wally's Advisors' Guide addresses | this | issue; it is worth rereading. Remember that for safety (lightning | avoidance, | hypothermia, for example) the crew must be able to move at a reasonable | speed. | | To me the key is that advisors need to know the capabilities and | attitudes of | all of the crew members, both youth and adult. On the other | hand, | if he/she is notably less capable than the rest of the crew you are | likely | setting up a situation where all involved have a bad trip.
