I think that rule depends on what year you go to Philmont as bear issues
change every year. Ask Philmont 505-376-2281

The main concern was for Bivy sacks being mistaken for a log (even though I
don't agree with that). I don't think that 1 man tents are in that
catagory. Several Rangers use 1 man tents and I've never heard anyone say
anything about that. The difference between say the OR Advanced Bivy and a
1 man tent is that a 1 man tent will have hoops on the foot end of the tent
as well as the head. Where as the OR Advanced bivy only has hoops at the
head. This gives a larger profile.

Subject: [Philmont]: One-man tents

Since one of our “youth” is an 18-yr-old and needs to tent with an adult, we
have an uneven number of under 18 youths. One of our boys owns a one-man
tent and would like to use it. Can he? I have read that all tents must be
two-man so bears don’t mistake them for logs. His tent is a Eureka Zeus and
looks a whole lot like the two-man Eureka Zeuses the rest of us will be
sleeping in.
