Revisiting an old thread:
>I have always been a roll and fold guy. I have only noticed a few

>to me. This thread has me rethinking my method. Not having to fold
>and roll to get on the trail has some appeal.
I recently went backpacking and tried the "stuffit" method with our
REI Half Dome backpacking tents. I've always instructed the boys to
fold and roll, trying to use different folding points if possible.
(One half one time, in thirds the next, etc.) The appeal of the
stuffing method sounded good, but it just didn't work.
Here's my experience:
When rolling a tent, the poles (and possibly the stakes) get rolled
up inside. With the stuffit method, the poles and stakes are added
last. This created a lot of pressure on the bag, nearly ripping it.
I can only imagine the consequences of having boys do this, instead
of a careful adult. I also found that the tent didn't compress very
well, especially when compared to a sleeping bag. It maintained a
lot of "loft." Rolling flat compresses more air out.
The tent was slightly wet too, because we had frost the night before.
This might have actually helped to compress the tent more because the
fabric was a little more malleable.
Perhaps other tents work better for this method, but I'm not going to
recommend that my scouts change to the stuffit method.
