My 21 year old son came with us. He has always had "problems" I would not
have let him go if I didn't go. As a parent I can predict his behavior and I
know what "buttons" to push (prozac helps too). One of the terrific things
about Philmont is adults don't have anything to do and unlike "troop" outings
have time to deal with some issues. He almost gave up one day and a little
talking and empathy and he was ready to go. Yes it was an important
accomplishemnt for him as a person. Lucky hecame since the another 2 adults I
had left the trail due to altitude sickness!!
Dealing with a youth is similar, but not as much control. I would need to be
real familiar with the scout before I would let him go. A blister is not a
reason to leave the trail. Duct tape and a new pair of socks, lets go. Though
nice boots makes it a lot easier that's up to the person. Maybe he "learned"
that he needs better boots. Sometimes a sock liners and wool socks will
compensate for the boot's shortcomings.
Shakedowns 3-5 days in November seems pretty aggressive anyway. We have the
benefit of forest preserves in close proximity. We scheduled shakedown hikes
every weekend starting in Feb. If someone missed a few no big deal.Having a lot
of 10-15 mile hikes increases the possibity of bad weather, a good thing on a
shakedown. The adults were at almost all of them the boys made about half. The
adults are the ones that need to hike as much as possible anyway. I would
venture to say 75% of youth a physically ready to go without shakedowns.
