He is convinced that he will be in condition for Philmont, because he is
walking on a treadmill for 1 - 2 miles per day, and this is a strenous
workout
for him.

You walk more than 2 miles in basecamp the day you arrive. This is at 6800
ft without a pack.

As I am sure all would agree, he is not in shape. To bring it home, make
him realize that him dealing with it when he gets there will not just affect
him. The crew will also have to deal with it. I have been there when a son
has to watch his father get carried out on a stretcher. I don't think any
adult wants a youth to have to see that.

Hopefully he will put forth more effort to get in shape.
