My goal was to loose weight equivalent to my pack weight. In theory I would
carry the same amount of weight on my legs. I got 28 lbs off and it worked
pretty well. my goal was 40 lbs. I did use hiking poles. We are close to
forest preserves so we hiked every week starting in Janaury. That way is
someone missed one no big deal. The adults knew they needed to come to most of
them.
I tend to think there isn't an exercise that simulate carring 35-45 pounds on
your back. To simulate the effect of altitude I added another 10 pounds when I
was feeling frisky.
