I got altitude sickness a few times myself. I come from about 100ft.

There was a study once that found that athletic in shape people got altitude
sickness more than out of shape couch potatoes. This study was done on a
group of doctors at a medical convention at a ski resort. They found that
the athletic energetic ones (doctors who ran and exercised regularly) hit
the slopes the minute they got there and then pushed themselves hard from
the get go. Where as the less athletic ones (doctors who did not exercise
regularly) did not. As you can imagine, those who did not allow for
climitization were the ones who got AMS.

This just goes to show that athletic ability has nothing to do with it. My
brother drives a desk for a living and he never gets AMS. The high altitude
doesn't affect his breathing much either. I guess I got the bad genes there
:)

I found what works best for me is to take it easy the first day or two.
There's not much you can do for preperation. I would do my perperation hikes
around town only breating through my nose to force my body to deal with less
oxygen. The best you can do is get your heart and lungs used to working
harder.
