I have to agree with the mental aspect, though it doesn't make-up for a total lack of training and/or fitness. When we went in 1998, I--the old person in the group (32 at the time)--had a desk job, was about 15# overweight for my 5' 5" frame, and was not at the fitness level I should have been. Did Trek 24 if I recall, from Ponil Turnouround up into the Valle, back down and finished by going over Shaeffers Peak and on to the Tooth.
I kept worrying out loud that I would be the 'weakest link' in the crew. Guess what? My 22-year-old college cycling team member (assistant advisor and previous trekker) and my 17-year-old high school first string linebacker were the slowest and loudest complainers of the whole trip! I was the one out front on all but the Shaeffers Peak day. Cycling many miles and playing football and wrestling alone doesn't necessarily prepare a body for carrying 50# uphill at altitude (we're lowlanders here at about 300' ASL). Treadmills alone won't either. Ya gotta have a positive attitude as well! The CREW needs to have a positive attitude toward all crew members.
Physical and mental fitness are both necessary for a successful trek.
