Philmont re-did their treks several years ago to increase the amount of time
at lower altitude to address this problem. From the readings I have done,
altitude sickness can start to occur at 8000' and above, so check out your
trek. One point: the symptons for altitude sickness and dehydration are
pretty much the same. It is my belief that if you stay hydrated and fed, you
will do well on the trail. I never heard a guy back at base camp say they
had to come off the trail because of dehydration. They all said it was
altitude sickness. I guess it puts the blame on the terrain and not the
person.
