RE: [Philmont]: Advisor participation

I've never been to Philmont--I love reading all about it--but two miles a
day is not a strenuous workout for most "in shape" people. My family went
for a 5 mile round trip hike last summer in the mountains and I was struck
down by the altitude, too. It wasn't how in shape I was; it was the
altitude. My 8 year old and 6 year old cruised the entire time. On the way
back "up" the hill (it really wasn't much of a hill), I could barely go more
than 10 paces without being completely exhausted. I had to wait, struggle
to catch my breath, then continue on another 10-15 paces and do it again. I
can't imagine how awful this would have been if I had an entire crew waiting
for me. So everyone here is right--it sounds like practice hikes need to be
at an altitude of some type, just to see how their body reacts, and to make
sure they are really ready for it.

Just my thoughts,
Kathy
