I agree totally. As I mentioned, I wish I had trained more. Although I
trained some, and was pretty impressed with myself for finishing (at age
52, and desk bound for 30 years), and I had a great experience, it probably
would have been better if I had been in better shape. For example, our
second day on the trail was at Crater Lake. Although I (sort of) wanted to
try spar pole climbing, I knew my limits - I was too "over-exerted" to be
able to do it. I probably would have been fine about day 6 or 7, but that
day I just watched.
So, get yourself in the best shape possible to maximize your enjoyment of
the trip, but give yourself a chance even if you don't think you're quite
there.
And, I strongly recommend trekking poles.
