I totally understand being a flatlander & trying to prepare for a mountain
trek. The only hills in our town are the highway on & off ramps. A couple
of ideas to consider depending on what is available in your locale.
1) Football stadium stairs: go hike up & down the stairs for a workout.
Build up to doing it with a fully weighted pack. I don't mean just up &
down once; work up to a good hour regimen.
2) Tall office building stairwells - take hike!
3) Go hike up & down inside a parking garage (watch out for the traffic!)
4) Stair-step exercise machine
With stairs, you can get creative & establish different stepping patterns
that also will work your muscles differently. Such as step up with the same
foot to each level & bring the other foot up beside the 1st foot before you
step up again. Then alternate the lead foot. Another way is to bring the
2nd foot up past the first one to the step above. What you can do & how
inventive you can get will depend on how high & deep the stairs you are
working with are.
