Here is what I sent in private email to AJ about my experience in the course
in 2002.
The West Fellows course (now Endowing Non-Profits) is more about showing the
money people where the money is going than sitting in classes.
In 2002, I think I had a total of 5 hours of class room time for the entire
week. We always broke for lunch far earlier than everyone else (giving me
far too much time to walk over to TOTT and spend money :-( ), and never had
afternoon classes. Instead, we would tour the ranch. We went to Ponil,
Pueblano, oh, heck I can't even remember all the places we went to, it must
have been every camp to the north of CHQ, we went to the COPE course, Rocky
Mountain Scout Camp, went to see the buffalo, inspected the fire damage,
went to the t-rex footprint, etc. All via suburban, so it was like a trek
without the trekking.

We also had a special buffalo steak dinner at Karson museum with the wigs
from Philmont and National, private tour of Villa Philmonte, etc.

In other words, we got the grand tour, and only spent an hour to 1.5 hours
in class on Tues, Thursday and Friday in the morning.

Then we got a special award designed by the course instructors, it looks
just like the 50 mile afoot/afloat award, except it has a suburban where the
paddle/shoe cross and it says 50 mile afoot aboard. We also got a red fleece
with the West Fellow square knot embroidered in the breast. Waite Phillips
biography too.

In other words, while everyone else was in class, we spent all our time
playing. The tour of CHQ and the food packaging area were particularly
fascinating.

So, for a change, while the wife and kids were in their programs, I'm
galavanting around the ranch seeing the sites with private tours, and they
got to be jealous of me instead of the other way around for regular PTC
courses.

If you can do the endowing non-profits course, do it, I can't imagine a
better way to spend a week. Make sure you hike the Urraca trail on
Wednesday.

Regards

Don
