Garry,

If you have not done it in the past, this is a great opportunity to try Roses
and Thorns. Each person has a chance to speak, but does not have to. A rose
is a high point of that day, or the best thing during that day for a person.
A thorn is a down thing, or something they do not like that day. There
should be no opinions, judgment or discussion of what is said. An advisor
may facilitate somewhat, but not be overbearing. It is a chance to truly
share with your group. In Philmont, the crew leaders facilitated the
discussion. Our troop does it all of the time. I taught it to my patrol in
Woodbadge they loved it.

You will be shocked at some of the answers. Youth will tell you things that
you have overlooked, or never thought of. Remember, they are a totally
different animal than adults. Just sit back, be quiet and listen. You will
learn something of value every time. Many of the thorns in my troop have led
to changes in the way we do things. Many of the roses have led to us doing
fun things more often.
