If the parent can handle letting go, there is no problem with a
parent/crewleader relationship. Unfortunately, I have seen more parents who
don't want to stop being a parent and instead interfere with their child who
is crew leader.
Unfortunately, advisors tend to step in too much and like to take over (not
all cases, but it is very often). When this happens, it is very dificult for
the child to say to the parent "Hey, I'm in charge, sit down and shut up."
This is something we teach the crew leader that he/she needs to do if an
advisor gets too bossy. OK, well, maybe not in those words exactly ;)
But if the parent is willing to step back and let watch their child grow and
make some mistakes, it makes for a great memory that parent and child got to
experience P2 together.

Subject: [Philmont]: Crew leaders
A new thread, but right now we are struggling with how to break up our group
of 24 into two crews. For those who know, what are the pros and cons of
having the crew leader be the son of the advisor? We'll actually have 4
adults in each crew, but the way things are lining up, we could have this
father-son thing in both crews.

PS - For those who were giving me feedback last week on my
"questionable" scout, he ended up being sick for last weekend's outing.
So we don't know any more now than we did before. It's time for a
heart-to-heart with son and mom.
