Re: [Philmont]: 2003 itineraries

I doubt if Philmont has decided yet. Note that after July 13th,
everything in the North country that was north of U.S. Rt 64 and west of
the Middle Ponil creek was reopened. Everything on or east of the
Middle Ponil Creek (except Ponil itself) was closed. That included
McBride Canyon, Anasazi, Indian Writings, Cottonwood Trail Camp, Old
Camp, Cook Canyon, Dan Beard, Bent, and Sioux.

As a guess, Philmont is going to have to leave most of these camps
closed, at least til they see what happens with with wintertime rains,
and the ongoing remediation efforts. Also, some camps themselves may be
"fine", but the trails getting to them may be hazardous or hard to
follow. Other camps may have so many widowmakers that they'll have to
remain closed for years.

If these areas remain closed, it will have an obvious impact on about a
third of the itineraries, and will also have a ripple effect on the rest
of the Ranch, and on most of the other itineraries - if Crews can't camp
in certain spots, they'll move them to other camps, and the Crews
originally scheduled for those camps will have to be moved to avoid
overcrowding, and so on - a giant game of musical chairs, if you will.
Philmont did an excellent job of this, on-the-fly, this past summer.

Assuming you are asking this question so your Crews can "pre-select" a
2003 trek based on the 2002 PEAKS book, my advice is: "Go Ahead" - but
also anticipate that your pre-selected treks may change in the meantime,
so be flexible and ready to make some changes when the PEAKS books
arrive. Even if you have to make changes, the exercise in pre-selecting
five treks is a valuable and worthwhile one - just go in with your eyes
open, and don't invest too much emotional capital in your choices.
