I'm by far no wildland firefighting expert, I've only read stories about
fires & fightening them. One thing I have gleaned is that these dead trees
are called snags, and there and a big fear of those who have to be out
mopping up after a fire, because they don't always know which ones are going
to fall and because of the nature of their work, they have to be out amongst
them. Since becoming aware of this, to my recollection is seems every fire
season there are fighter deaths from snags falling. A very real danger.

A widowmaker is a dead branch or standing tree that falls on you, thus
making your wife a widow. With a large burned area, it would be very
difficult to access which burned trees are structurally sound and which are
not.
