I would bet that the North Country will have UNUSABLE PLACES again this
year. As for off property in the Ville and Carson it is anybody's guess.
Al Thompson's spreadsheet at
http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/philmont-treks2002.xls with the fire
modified treks is probably a best bet. It will all depend on how much rain
and snow Philmont has gotten since last summer. As always the Official
Treks book will be out in mid March and it is anybody's guess what the treks
will be like.
Also Coop Wright and Wally Feurtado have written the "Philmont Advisor's
Guide" which is full of very good information. The book is not an official
Philmont publication it can only be obtained by emailing Coop and asking him
for it. mailto:CoopWright@aol.com
I suggest you survey your crew for the activities they would like to do and
assess their skills and abilities before then. Be ready for a meeting
shortly after you receive the treks and let them choose their trek. Use the
advisors trump card if they pick too much trek for their ability and point
it out to them. Remember "There are no bad treks at Philmont", every one is
a unique experience that depends on the attitude of the crew, the weather,
and did I mention the attitude of the crew. A well prepared and positive
thinking crew will enjoy every trek.
I have one unpublished correction to the spreadsheet on the trek 26 we took
715Q2. We were dropped off at Zastro turn around and hike into Zastro
(diaper day 3/4 mile). Because we went out on the 8am bus we had plenty of
time for ranger training and mountain biking program in the afternoon. The
Mountain Biking equipment was brought down from either Iris Park or Rich
Cabins in 2002.
All in all trek 26 was a really nice trek. However we did not get the full
experience of wading the creek 50+ times from North Fork Uracca to Black
Mountain, it was a mere trickle. Our crew woke up at 5am and were moving by
5:45 almost every day, we would eat breakfast at our break an hour later,
sometimes heating water sometimes not. The hardest day for me was when we
climbed Mt. Philips, I've been up Baldy three times and it wasn't as hard as
Philips with a full pack.
Keep picking the experienced folks for information but most of all pick out
what will work best for you. Remember there are no bad treks at Philmont,
however some are more
challenging than others.

"Was wondering if anyone has heard if the 2003 treks will be pretty much the
same as those shown in the 2002 TREKS book or if the 2002 fire will result
in
major changes in the 2003 treks. I am working with a first-ever council
contingent and trying to get ahead of the game. Thanks!!"
