Greetings All,

I'm sure we could beat this thread to death, but the truth is, we really won't
know until the new books come out.

My *guess* is that there will be numerous modifications to treks that used to
travel extensively in the Valle and North Country because of trails that have
been obliterated, hazards like snags etc., infrastructure requirements (sumps,
bear bag cables and latrines that were rendered unusable by the fires for
example) and to minimize the potential for erosion.

My *guess* is that there will also be changes to the treks in the Central and
South to 1) accommodate the changes mentioned above and 2) the result of some of
the "FM" changes last year that worked.

However, these are just guesses. Yours are just as good as mine (if not
better).

In the mean time, I would survey the crew and get them to list and rank the
*activities* - including geographical features like Baldy, Mt. Phillips, Black
Mountain, Tooth of Time etc.- that they want to try and participate in. The
past Treks books have had a section that details what activities are available
on what treks; I expect that will continue. This advance prep will lessen the
amount of time it takes your crew to reach a consensus when you receive the
package next spring. It will also reduce the amount of time spent in
speculation.

The Philmont Advisor's Guide by Cooper Wright and Wally Feurtado describes this
process in more detail. And it has a lot more really good advice, for seasoned
veterans as well as rookies.

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher
