My summary is the routes as published in March, before any fire
modifications. As they changed on a sometimes daily basis, I doubt anyone
outside of Philmont's Logistics has any handle on them.

As Chip noted, the Mountain Biking program moved to Zastrow in 2002 in
response to the fire. It is my understanding that Zastrow will be a
staffed camp again in 2003, but with a different program. If so, there
will be changes to South routes to accomodate that.

As others have noted, there are no bad treks - meaning the physical route.
But the crew has to choose five. Those choices should first be
consistent with the crew's ability - a less-than-prepared crew on a
strenuous or super strenuous route will probably have a "bad trek".
Probably the second and third criteria are the programs and the portion of
the ranch (which some crews might call the peaks available to be climbed).

That is where summaries like mine and Julian's come into play - they are
information to help narrow down the choices. There is no point in
selecting south routes if you are interested only in Baldy. But Phillips
is just as much a challenge as Baldy - maybe more since most routes do it
with packs rather than a side hike, so some south routes should be
considered if the crew "wants to climb a mountain", but is open as to
which one. Likewise, there is little point in selecting treks with no
opportunities for rock climbing or shooting or whatever if that is the one
activity the crew is most interested in, especially when some treks have
two opportunities for some programs.

By reviewing whatever data from 2002 you can, the crew can prepare to
evaluate the new information in the TREKS 2003 booklet that will arrive in
March. And that information will be different - probably more in 2003
than any year in quite a while (except for the complete reworking of
2000). But there is no point in obsessing over it - just make sure the
five selections meet the crew's ability, and then their primary interests.
But it is very possible after the trek that their favorite day and
program will not be what they had as the pre-trek favorite.
