There is a Kit Carson Museum a couple of miles from Base Camp. There is a
shuttle bus that can be signed up for when you arrive at Base Camp, or you
can go on your own if you have personal transportation. It's a worthwhile
tour.
I have not heard this facility referred to as the Car-Max Museum. I would
guess that the Max in this case stands for Lucien Maxwell. Not sure if they
have added that to the name of the museum, or if it refers to some other
facility that I don't know about. Perhaps someone else can shed light on
this?

What is now known as Rayado used to be known as Car-Max, which is short for
Carson - Maxwell. About the only place I know it is still used is the last
line of the Ranger song:
I want to go back to Philmont
Where the old Rayado flows,
Where the rain comes a seepin'
In the tent where you're a sleepin'
Arid the waters say hello. HELLO (shout)
I want to wake up in the morning
With my socks all wringing wet,
For it brings back fondest memories,
That a Ranger can't forget. WANNA BET (shout)
I want to hike once more the canyon floor
>From Scribblins to Old Camp,
With my pack sack a-creakin',
With my back with sweat a-reekin',
And my legs beginning to cramp. OHHHH (shout)
I want to hike again with such great men
As made those famous treks,
>From Beaubien to Porky
And from Cito to Car-Max. HIP, HIP, HORAY (shout 3 times)
"Scribblins" is now known as Indian Writings. "Porky" I believe is
Porcupine.
Several treks end by hiking to Rayado, so they get the tour automatically
before catching a bus back to Base.
