[Philmont]: Disappointing camps

>There was a discussion late last year about favorite camps. Without being
overly negative, perhaps we should discuss camps and/or programs that were
not so great. I know some people were disappointed with some logistical
issues such as overcrowding and many other unique situations that last year
could not be avoided because of the fire.

people expected, this could help some groups in their decision making.

Camps change because of staff and trek.

In 2000, we spent the second night in Sawmill. The crew was worn out from
the climb, but proud a crew from Illinois could huff it up. We enjoyed our
first activity - rifle shooting. The staff was friendly. Great swing on
the front porch. We got a hot shower. We ignored the rocky ledges to sleep
on. In 2000, Sawmill was one of our favorite camps.

In 2002, 3 of the 2000 crew returned with 9 new crew members and we all were
very disappointed with the camp. We spent the 8th night at Sawmill and had
already shot muzzle loading rifles and shot guns on our trek. The rifle
shooting was disappointing - the rifles were not sited in. There were no
hot showers. The swing was gone. We found the staff rude and the "campfire"
distasteful. We noted on our comment cards that the staff didn't present a
very good "philmont" image. In 2002, Sawmill was our least favorite camp.

Same camp, same program, different staff and different day on the trek (we
had other camps to compare it to).

On another note, in 2002 our trek was changed and we didn't find out our new
trek intermarry until 4 days before we left base camp. We had selected our
first trek because there were 6 things we wanted to do. The new trek had
only 3 of those 6 activities. The crew complained all the way to Philmont,
especially about trying to see the T-Rex print.

No one complained after we left.

There are no bad treks at Philmont because they all provide the same thing:
Camaraderie and accomplishment.
