You know, I might be inclined to agree about Sawmill last August. I
was ecstatic to get there, they had fresh oranges on the porch for us,
the sunrise was great, and a couple of our boys managed to fix an MSR
Whisperlite that had gotten dust in the jet (a major win). The swing
was up.
On the other hand, the staff was making stupid jokes about
"congratulations, you finally made it cyphers". Running down cyphers?
The rifles were a challenge to aim, and the safety glasses were barely
transparent. We had a couple crack shots who couldn't hit the side of
a barn. No showers, but that wasn't a problem. I got the sense that
it was just one or two bad apples on staff.

I know some people were disappointed with some logistical | issues such as overcrowding and many other unique situations that last year | could not be avoided because of the fire. | > | > If there are any camps or programs that need attention or where not what | people expected, this could help some groups in their decision making. | | Camps change because of staff and trek. | | In 2000, we spent the second night in Sawmill. The crew was worn out from | the climb, but proud a crew from Illinois could huff it up. We enjoyed our | first activity - rifle shooting. The staff was friendly. Great swing on | the front porch. We got a hot shower. We ignored the rocky ledges to sleep | on. In 2000, Sawmill was one of our favorite camps. | | In 2002, 3 of the 2000 crew returned with 9 new crew members and we all were | very disappointed with the camp. We spent the 8th night at Sawmill and had | already shot muzzle loading rifles and shot guns on our trek. The rifle | shooting was disappointing - the rifles were not sited in. There were no | hot showers. The swing was gone. We found the staff rude and the "campfire" | distasteful. We noted on our comment cards that the staff didn't present a | very good "philmont" image. In 2002, Sawmill was our least favorite camp. | | Same camp, same program, different staff and different day on the trek (we | had other camps to compare it to). | | On another note, in 2002 our trek was changed and we didn't find out our new | trek intermarry until 4 days before we left base camp. We had selected our | first trek because there were 6 things we wanted to do. The new trek had | only 3 of those 6 activities. The crew complained all the way to Philmont, | especially about trying to see the T-Rex print. | | No one complained after we left. | | There are no bad treks at Philmont because they all provide the same thing: | Camaraderie and accomplishment. | | Stan Herrin | Springfield, IL 67, 00, 02 | | | | | | | ------------------------------------------------------- | Scouting E-mail Discussion Lists @ usscouts.org | Subscribe/Unsubscribe at http://usscouts.org/lists/ | Listserv Commands at http://usscouts.org/lists/lc.asp | ------------------------------------------------------- | Send listserv commands to: listserv@troop47.com | Send postings to: philmont@troop47.com | List FAQ found at: http://usscouts.org/lists/faq.asp | List Administrator: philmont_owner@troop47.com | ------------------------------------------------------- | As you gather around this virtual campfire with fellow | Scouts and Scouters, do your best to be trustworthy, | loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, | cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. | ------------------------------------------------------- | | | | | | ------------------------------------------------------- Scouting E-mail Discussion Lists @ usscouts.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe at http://usscouts.org/lists/ Listserv Commands at http://usscouts.org/lists/lc.asp ------------------------------------------------------- Send listserv commands to: listserv@troop47.com Send postings to: philmont@troop47.com List FAQ found at: http://usscouts.org/lists/faq.asp List Administrator: philmont_owner@troop47.com ------------------------------------------------------- As you gather around this virtual campfire with fellow Scouts and Scouters, do your best to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. -------------------------------------------------------
