Rice, I am glad you pointed that out!! I used the wrong word to express my
thoughts.

I'm SORRY, I'm SORRY, I'm SORRY.

We all have bad days. "BAD" was too strong of word. All staff are helpful
and enthusiastic, some a little less.

All I was trying to say is that if all I remember from Philmont is the staff
members who annoyed the crew, I would miss the real Philmont Experience!!

I hope this clarifies that.

I hope that this not spawn a thread on bad staff experiences because there
are far more pleasant memories.

Again, I am sorry.

Wally

Wally:

Thank you for that. I have often said that Philmont has become too much of
an "entertain me" place and that we have forgotten the land and the
experience that you so aptly described. When my son comes of age, I will
take a trek with him and I will attempt to steer the crew to the trek that
offers fewer staff camps than the average trek.

However, did you really mean to say that there are bad staff members in
every camp? If so, I heartily and respectfully disagree. To be sure, a few
bad apples slip through but bad staff members in every camp? Nope, just
don't see it.

In 1996, the camp directors had an impassioned plea to the hikers that the
program at Philmont was not the horse riding, or shooting, or the staff, but
the scenery and that we need to take time to enjoy it. I no longer even
consider the programs part of the experience other than they are a
diversion. It is important to encourage the youth to participate in them
but in the long run, the program play such a small part of what is
remembered at Philmont. It is the scenery and the camaraderie, the rain,
the hail, the sweat, and the tears, and the watching the youth mature that
makes each one of my arrowhead awards so meaningful to me.

Sawmill is one of my very favorite camps because of the location and the
opportunity to look down the canyon to watch the sunrise. Uracca Mesa is
also my very favorite staff camp because of the sunrise at Inspiration
Point. Comanche Peak is my very favorite camp because of the great viewing
area North of the campsite. Tooth Ridge has a wonderful area to watch the
sunrise.

The bottom line is that there are bad staff in all camps now and then but
Gods beauty endures!!

We arrived at Sawmill after a long day on the trail. We had warned the crew

that we had probably missed program. I believe we got there at 5 or 530pm.
When we arrived we were greeted warmly, encouraged to drink the bug juice on

the front porch and had a few minutes to visit with some of the staff while
other staff prepared the reloading program. We got to reload and shoot. My

hat (a favorite target for the entire trek) was hit twice. The program was
efficient, but not hurried. Everyone had a great time. Our two staffers
were nick named "Goose" and "Elvis". We did manage to miss a few of our
program opportunities in 2002 but we would have missed at memorable, fun
time without the great staffers at Sawmill.

The downside of our long day was cooking, eating and cleaning up in a rush
and finishing well after dark. No trouble, since our next day was a small
stroll from Sawmill to the top of Mt. Phillips with a side hike to from
Thunder Ridge to Cyphers for water.

Most of the time I spent "unfound" was in camps like Sawmill (day or night)
and Mt. Phillips (fog and night).
