MessageThat is exactly why I started it (learning from John LeBlanc). It gives a whole new perspective and it seems that when picking treks for this summer, the focus does not need to be the programs but the trek and experience.
Programs are just a bonus. And it seems the common theme is that a couple people or staff members may have had a bad day, causing a negative impression. But this happens in all walks of life. If everybody focuses on the program(s), they are bound to be disappointed at some time.
In fact, I really think that the fire was the best thing that happened to our crew. As the lead advisor, I went from obsessive compulsive about learning everything I could about Trek 21, to not having a clue as to where our trek would lead us. I was able (with some effort) to change my disappointment into excitement about the unknown and I think this rubbed off. Heck, we were just happy to be able to go with a fire raging like that a week before. And what made it work was the training, teamwork, friendships and living in the moment. You cannot imagine how many times I was thankful to be at that spot and not answering the phone.
I will never forget the night when my son woke me up at midnight to "come look at the stars". We had discussed it but I slept thru my alarm. He didn't. He NEVER gets up by an alarm, but he did at Philmont to see something that was so beautiful we just stood in awe.
That is the Philmont program. This was an unstaffed camp!

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Disappointing camps (Not)
One thing this thread demonstrates is how one person (a staff member at a camp) can have a significant impact, positive or negative, on a number of people (an entire crew) that they touch for only a short period of time.
