[Philmont]: Trekking Poles

I too was a skeptic when it came to using trekking poles. I had been to
Philmont three times prior to 2002, twice as an adult advisor, and had not
used them on any of those treks. As a matter of fact I first viewed them as
another gadget sold in the outfitter store.

I was never particularly fond of having my hands full when hiking. I read
numerous posts on this lists praising the value of trekking poles on aging
knees and decided to give them a try. Prior to buying my trekking poles I
had always picked up a stick when I wanted extra support and either burned
it or threw it away when I was done.

In order to justify the purchase I used the following logic. The poles
could be used as the tarp poles and weighed about the same, if I carried
them instead of using them as trekking poles net crew weight was equal.
Then I considered the other uses mentioned on the list, camera monopod or
tripod, clothes drying rack, splint, etc. as reasons to bring them. I used
my new poles extensively prior to going to Philmont in order to build my
arms up and to develop a cadence with them. I am very happy with my poles
and they are now a big part of my backpacking equipment.
