In summary, if you are planning on using trekking poles, be sure to add
some
arm and upper back exercises to your pre-trip physical fitness routine.
Some good ideas on this may be found on the Backpacker Magazine web
site.
They have run several articles over the years about training for
backpacking
and have specific suggestions about exercises that target the muscles
used in this activity.

As another poster indicated, one of the best ways to accomplish this is
to use your trekking poles in your other conditioning activities. If
you are carrying your pack on a workout, use your poles. I will admit
that I probably looked pretty weird hiking around my neighborhood,
(that's why I did it at night) but it paid off at the ranch.

Adding to what others have said, they can be a great asset - I'm sure
mine saved me a lot of discomfort and I know they kept me from taking
several falls.

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher
