The subject of water filters is always interesting and we can go on and on. The program at Double H requires crews to provide filters as part of their group gear. We know the small ones are not big enough, fast enough, etc, etc. We figured that there had to be some bigger ones available that might be used by outfitters, hunters etc. Some in out group said they had them in Minnesota at the Boundary Waters area and others on a big raft trip. Unfortunately we don't know who makes them. I will of course check the usual manufacturers web sites, etc. Just hoping for a short cut!
Personally, for Philmont, where water is a challenge but a known commodity, I prefer to just use the polar pure. In all my time, with proper planning, map reading, and talking to crews you cross on the trail with, water has not been an issue and you can usually find a suitable source that only requires polar pure. If you are lucky and on the right trek, you don't even have to use it that much. I think Dear Lake Mesa, in 1990 was the worst water I ever encountered at the ranch. It was so bad I wouldn't let the guys drink it and we loaded up some packs and hiked the 4 miles to Phillips Junction to refill for crew. Hmmmm, maybe I should rethink this ....-;)
