Mick
I have a Garman with Altimeter and Compass. Works well if I preload
routes or just want to know where I am (rivers). I never took a GPS
to Philmont.
You will have times at Philmont when you will not know where you
are. You may get lost, or have significant delays as you get back
on track.
Most of the time you are following very well traveled trails with
appropriately placed trail signs. There are many more trails on the
ground than are on the map.
Most youth need to confront their poor navigation skills, and learn
to lead through uncertainty.
GPS is a fine nav tool, but most take 3 AA's per day.
Those are the facts, your call on how to spend your Money and Oz
Allowance:-)

Subject: [Philmont]: GPS
Hi:
Costco has Magellan GPS units for $198. Is this a good investment
for Philmont? Or should I instead spend the money as a down payment
on trekking poles for two Scouts and one adult? The Scouts enjoy
using the GPS in a real-life situation. Seems like a good teaching
opportunity.
Best regards for 2004
