Fred,

Our troop has used the "first need" water purifier for several years,
including three treks to Philmont. It is one of the few pump type filters that
actually purifies the water. It works well for crew sized groups. We generally
carry one per crew, and a large nalgene collapsible container to pump into. We
then distribute the purified water to small bottles from the large container. We
filtered some really nasty looking water at Wild Horse and other campsites,
but the filters continued to work well. We usually wrap a paper coffee filter
over the inlet in really dirty water. My personal unit was purchased in 1998,
and I have been using it on scout trips, hunting trips and personal camping
trips in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arkansas, and Lousiana ever since. I
generally change the filter once per year.

One of our scout leaders found that Walton feed - http://www.waltonfeed.com
sells them for a very reasonable price. We bought our first units from REI,
and they were pretty expensive. I would suggest an internet search to find the
best price.

Enjoy your trip to the Double H, I wish I was on your crew.....
