I don't believe GPSs are necessary at Philmont. With good map and compass skills - having a GPS is simply extra weight (not to mention batteries) Its hard to break a compass. Also if you stick to your trek itinerary and stay on trail - it is very hard to get lost (not impossible but improbable). GPS units are really unnecessary - I took one in 2001 and used it twice just for fun. Did not take it in 2003 and did not miss it at all....

I have a Garman with Altimeter and Compass. Works well if I preload
routes or just want to know where I am (rivers). I never took a GPS
to Philmont.

You will have times at Philmont when you will not know where you

Most of the time you are following very well traveled trails with

I took a GPS in '01 (with great expectations and excitement) and found it to
be most inaccurate. The reasons were well explained on this list at that
time. Since I carry a walking stick (the 5 foot bamboo stick has proven to be
more useful to me than other choices), not treking poles, I don't know how to
tell you to spend your money!!! Maybe a good tent or light sleeping bag.

Fred,
Our troop has used the "first need" water purifier for several years,
including three treks to Philmont. It is one of the few pump type filters that
actually purifies the water. It works well for crew sized groups. We generally
carry one per crew, and a large nalgene collapsible container to pump into. We
then distribute the purified water to small bottles from the large container. We
filtered some really nasty looking water at Wild Horse and other campsites,
but the filters continued to work well. We usually wrap a paper coffee filter
over the inlet in really dirty water. My personal unit was purchased in 1998,
and I have been using it on scout trips, hunting trips and personal camping
trips in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arkansas, and Lousiana ever since. I
generally change the filter once per year.
One of our scout leaders found that Walton feed - http://www.waltonfeed.com
sells them for a very reasonable price. We bought our first units from REI,
and they were pretty expensive. I would suggest an internet search to find the
best price.
Enjoy your trip to the Double H, I wish I was on your crew.....
