You can certainly use a GPS if you like, but they are not necessary. There are so many side trails and junctions at Philmont that you still need t be able to accurately read a map to tell where you are. We carried one last summer -- but it remained an interesting toy for an advisor, not a tool for our navigating Scouts. Of course now, it is an interesting diversion to stop at random times and be able to tell that "the summit of Baldy is 1,650 miles that way."
