I have a GPS but did not take this year. The best method to trek at Philmont
is with the maps and compass. I would practice with these skills on all
training hikes so that everyone on the crew can follow the trail on the map. It is
almost impossible to become lost if you are following the trail with the maps.
GPS will be a toy to play with but I would drop it to eliminate weight. The
most important thing is to bring the necessary items and to eliminate as much
weight as possible in everyone's pack. Use the funds to buy the lightest
required items and the trek will be lot more fun for everyone. Our crew this year had
packs starting with food and water of 36 lbs. Emphasize this with your crew
and when they are considering buying something to stress go with the lighter
items. Unfortunately, these tend to be the more expensive items.
