My son (who just received his eagle award) then 15 twisted his ankle on
a practice hike so I lent him one of my old ski poles which I was using
for trekking poles. He has had it with him ever since. (Two trips to
Philmont and one to Elkhorn including all the workups)

Be careful of the "scouts don't need them" comment someone made. It's
true (I guess), but on my first trek, after swearing he'd NEVER want
one, my son changed his mind a couple of days out and "borrowed"
(permanently) one of my two :-)
